Vineyard House

A contemporary addition to a Cotswolds home inspired by its Georgian origins

The owners of this Georgian Farmhouse with its own Vineyard came to us with a clear brief: to enhance the kitchen by increasing the light and space and improving the connection of the house to its beautiful garden. We had a shared vision, that any alterations should stay true to the house’s unique character and spirit, while maximising the connection to the landscape. This ambitious project involved extending the house along the southern elevation of the house to maximise the views of the garden. This created a sequence of spaces, each with a different relationship with the outside space, culminating with a new dining room with corner glazing to direct the views, reconnecting the Georgian frontage of the house.

A new dining room and utility room bookend the addition and are constructed from brick the central section reads like a glazed link and provides light and access to the kitchen. The material palette and detailing reflects the existing house; handmade bricks were selected to enable the addition to be coursed to match the existing Georgian façade, the colour was chosen to match the Cotswold stone of the older part of the house. This has the effect of the new addition seamlessly blending tonally into its context, providing a softness and subtlety.

"We cannot recommend working with Design Storey highly enough. We contacted them with a very high level brief that we wanted to improve our kitchen layout, increasing the views and light to the garden. They understood exactly what we wanted to improve and had lots of ideas on how to do that. We loved the designs. All through the process Design Storey provided us with options on design, yet gave us clear views on what they thought.

Design Storey put significant effort in to ensuring that a detailed design was locked down. This investment of time up front set us up for smooth delivery of the project. They made everything very low stress for us, and had an amazing eye for quality and detail throughout. We absolutely love the end result. We highly recommend Design Storey."
