The Ark
NEW OUTBUILDING | LISTED BUILDING
The owners of a Grade II Listed building in a historic Cotswold market town, commissioned Design Storey architects to design ancillary guest accommodation at the rear of the property. The old street pattern of the town comprises of a series of mediaeval burgages with open orchards buffering the town from the fields beyond. The site for the accessory building was located in one of these former orchards that had been subject to residential development in the 1970s.
Drawing inspiration from the agricultural heritage of the site, and the remaining former livestock buildings at its fringes, the building was conceived in form and materials as a contemporary pig ark. The ‘Ark’ has a simple curved roof structure of black corrugated zinc forming a canopy over a subterranean basement which houses guest accommodation for the main house. The simple and robust design and honest detailing reflects the agricultural history of the area.
