Planning Granted for Former Police Station in a Conservation Area

The ‘Bell House’ is a c19th former police station located in the picturesque village of Stourton in the Cotswolds. Although the house itself is not listed, it is located in a prominent position in a conservation area within close proximity of several listed buildings, therefore the site is considered to be sensitive.

The clients approached us to explore ways to extend the property while enhancing the exterior appearance and celebrating the architectural qualities of the existing building. The brief was to create an open plan kitchen/ dining room, boot room and office on the ground floor and add an additional bedroom and a master bedroom suite on the first floor.

We designed two extensions, with handmade brick frontages and stone rear elevations to match the existing building. In order to differentiate the new from old we used contemporary brick detailing to surround the larger glazed openings to the rear to unify the facade. New steel windows are proposed to the rear elevation to provide views and access to the garden, while referencing the Georgian proportions of the existing windows.

We received planning permission for the project in Spring 2022, with construction due to start later this year.
