The scheme involved a ‘light touch renovation’ of the existing listed building fabric and the creation of additional floor space through the careful insertion of new, lightweight mezzanine structures. Spaces, that had previously been sub-divided as part of earlier renovations have been opened up to increase the legibility of the original library building. Edwardian features, such as the original maple flooring hidden by later works, have been exposed as part of the renovation. The new interventions are industrial in character, contrasting with the existing building, and articulating the new from the existing.
