We are an award-winning architecture practice based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Inspired by the unique context of each project we enjoy creating thoughtful site-specific designs that enhance the urban or rural environment. Our approach has been recognised by the Miner’s Cottages winning two prestigious RIBA awards, including a special award for conservation.
Formed in 2013, we are an enthusiastic and personable studio that feels able to rise to any challenge, enjoying getting our teeth into tricky architectural issues in a variety of building types. We work on a diverse range of projects from the creative reuse of existing buildings, conservation work through to new build construction. These range from small scale residential additions for private clients through to larger developments for commercial developers and contractors.
We are a design-led practice, working on a small number of projects at any one time, this enables the directors to be personally involved in all of the projects. We don’t have a “house style” but instead provide a tailored service where each project and client is treated as unique. Our architectural designs are bespoke solutions, developed to meet a specific brief for an individual client, typically in unique and complex sites. We believe that one size does not fit all and we enjoy rising to the challenge of any problem; large or small.
We enjoy spending time teasing out the client’s brief and understanding their ambitions and requirements to ensure our designs go beyond the functional to exceed expectations. We believe the design process should be an active collaboration between the client, the architect and all the members of the design team. We strive to ensure a collaborative working environment both within our studio and externally.
Design Storey is led by Lydia Robinson and Lawrence Grigg, who collectively have over 25 year’s experience in delivering high quality architecture projects across a range of project types from airports to high-end houses. We lead a small team of architects and designers, who have a wide range of experience in the field of architecture and design.
What We Do
We enjoy working on a wide range of projects often in sensitive sites such as within conservation areas or the context of listed buildings, with a focus on design. We have worked on a variety of project types from gyms to houses, listed buildings to new builds, for both private and commercial clients.

We are happy to speak with you to advise how we might be able to assist with your project, either through an initial phone call or a site visit.
Our Design Process
We believe that a positive and strong relationship between the architect and client is critical to the success of a project. Therefore, we start every project with a “meet and greet” to ensure we are on the same page as the client regarding our design approach and also that we connect on a personal level.
We put a lot of emphasis and time into getting to know the client and their ambition as well as the site at an early stage of the project. We feel it is important to fully understand the aspirations and requirements of the client, which we document in a comprehensive project brief.
Although every project is unique, as a RIBA chartered practice, Design Storey follows the RIBA industry standard work stages in order to design and deliver architectural projects. We tailor these standard stages to the specific requirements of each project. The work stages provide a framework for the project known as a “plan of work” which the project follows from inception through to completion, from early feasibility studies to the final handover of the finished building. This enables the project team and client to understand what stage the project is at any given time and what level of detail is expected in each stage.
